Qin Feng: Dawei, could you help me out?

Dawei: No problem, what do you want me to do?

Qin Feng: Help me read a few lesson texts.

Dawei: What? You want me to help you read texts?

Qin Feng: Yes, I am asking you to help me record the lesson texts so that I can listen to and study them at the same time.

Dawei: Why?

Qin Feng: It’s like this. What I learned in China is British English. And what’s more, I didn’t learn very well, especially my pronunciation, which is almost like “Chinese English.”

Dawei: Your English sounds very good. I’ve already become much more used to your pronunciation.

Qin Feng: My accent is too strong. I want to speak the authentic American English, just like you.

Dawei: Then you should learn it from those TV show hosts. My English has got an accent too, with both French and Italian accents.

Qin Feng: How can that be?

Dawei: It’s hardly surprising. My grandfather is Italian, my mother is Quebecoise, and I have only lived in the United States for three years.

Qin Feng: That’s really interesting!

Dawei: There are far more interesting things. I heard that you want to immigrate?

Qin Feng: Yes, I have already submitted the application, but I don’t know when it will get approved by the Immigration Bureau.

Dawei: It should be fairly soon.

Qin Feng: That’s why I wanted to acquire standard American English real soon, the sooner the better.

Dawei: Even the Americans like me doesn’t speak standard American English. Why are you so determined to speak standard American English? I think as long as people can understand what you are saying, then that’s good enough.

Qin Feng: But…

Dawei: No “buts” about it. Your English is both fluent and pleasant to hear. Don’t be too hard on yourself.
